The Kejriwal Government has taken a historic decision to make Delhi the EV Capital of India. It has declared that electric vehicle charging stations will be built at all government offices. These charging stations will be ready within 3 months. In view of this, Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot stated – Electric vehicles are being promoted rapidly in Delhi to translate CM Arvind Kejriwal’s dream into reality. With charging stations present at government offices, employees will be able to charge their EVs while at work.
All Delhi government offices will have electric vehicle charging stations installed. These instructions have been issued in order to provide EV charging facilities to all government officers/employees and the general public that visits offices. According to the order issued by the Kejriwal Government, all departments of the Delhi government must identify suitable locations and install public charging stations on their premises. Within three months, electric vehicle charging stations will be installed in all government buildings.
A subsidy of Rs 6,000 per charging point will be provided for the establishment of an electric vehicle charging station through a DISCOM-empanelled vendor. The Transport Department, in collaboration with the Delhi DISCOMs, has established a single point of contact. The Single Window process can be used to install EV chargers from DISCOM-empanelled vendors at reduced and low tariffs. To promote electric mobility, the Kejriwal Government has directed all departments to install EV charging stations in their respective government buildings.
Delhi Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot said, “Electric vehicles are being promoted rapidly throughout Delhi in order to implement the vision of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal. In Delhi, electric vehicle charging stations are being built speedily. He stated that as a result of a new government decision, electric vehicle charging stations will now be installed in all government offices. The general public, in addition to government employees, will be able to charge their vehicles here. People will be able to charge their vehicles while working in government offices. Along with this, electric vehicles will motivate government officials and employees to come to work.”
Number of electric vehicles is rapidly increasing in Delhi
In the September-November quarter, electric vehicle sales in Delhi outperformed the sales of CNG and diesel vehicles. Electric vehicles account for 9% of total vehicle sales, compared to the national average of 1.6 percent. In September and November 2021, EV sales in Delhi increased by 9.2%. CNG vehicle sales, on the other hand, fell by 6.5% in November. During this time, a total of 9,540 electric vehicles were sold. In September, 2,873 were sold, 3,275 in October, and 3,392 in November. Following fuel-based vehicles in the list, electric vehicle sales have risen to second place.
EV policy acknowledged as the most progressive policy in India
In August 2020, the Delhi Government announced the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy, with the goal of promoting electric vehicles in the city and making Delhi the EV Capital of India. The Delhi Government’s EV policy has been recognised as the most progressive policy across the country. For all types of electric vehicles, Delhi is the first state to completely waive the road tax and registration fee. Aside from that, the eligibility criteria have been simplified so that people can benefit from the subsidy on a large scale. The goal is for electric vehicles to account for 25% of all new vehicle registrations by 2024. The progressive decisions of the Kejriwal Government have resulted in a rapid increase in the number of electric vehicles in Delhi.
Kejriwal Government took several steps to promote electric vehicles
The Kejriwal Government has taken a number of steps to promote electric vehicles – A subsidy on the purchase of electric vehicles has been provided. Instructions have been issued to commercial establishments to reserve 5% parking space for electric vehicles equipped with EV chargers. For the installation of EV charging points, a single-window facility has been introduced. The single-window service has greatly aided the establishment of EV charging points in Delhi. Subsidies have been provided to Delhi residents for the installation of EV charging stations. In addition, the Kejriwal administration has launched an electric vehicle website. It has further made electric vehicles mandatory in the ride-hailing and delivery service sectors.
