NEW DELHI:

The Kejriwal Government has taken up a unique initiative to provide thousands of families with pucca houses right at the site of their slums under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan’ scheme. In this vein, Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal reviewed the progress of the in-situ rehabilitation of JJ Clusters project at the Delhi Secretariat today. 78,000 families will be rehabilitated to permanent houses in a phased manner and about 16,000 families will benefit in the first phase. CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal has set a three-year deadline for the first 16,000 flats and has directed officers to provide all basic facilities to ensure hassle-free rehabilitation. The flats will be developed on the land of the slums itself instead of the previous provision of developing flats inside a 5km radius.

CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal chaired a high-level meeting to review the plans for in-situ rehabilitation of Jhuggi Jhopri Clusters on Delhi Government Lands under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan’ scheme. The meeting was held at the Delhi Secretariat in the presence of Deputy CM Shri Manish Sisodia and Urban Development Minister Shri Satyendar Jain. Senior officers of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the Public Works Department (PWD) along with those of the Power and Water were also present in the meeting. Officials apprised the Chief Minister about the status of pucca houses being constructed at different places across Delhi.

The Kejriwal government has decided to rehabilitate about 78 thousand families living in slums to pucca houses. For this purpose, the government is constructing flats on the land available under its jurisdiction. The Delhi Government will construct more than 78 thousand flats in a phased manner. In the first phase, 16 thousand families will be rehabilitated to pucca houses by 2024. CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal has given strict instructions to the concerned departments to complete the ongoing projects within three years at any cost.

It is noteworthy that the Kejriwal Government is providing pucca houses to thousands of families living in slums under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahi Makan’ scheme by taking up in-situ rehabilitation of JJ Clusters. These families will be given houses at the same site as where they have their slums. Till the time the pucca houses are constructed, these families will be temporarily shifted to the flats of Delhi Government which have already been developed. Special care will be taken to ensure that these temporary flats are also provided near their slums. Once the DUSIB flats get developed, these families will be shifted to them permanently.

CM Arvind Kejriwal directs officers to ensure development & connection of all basic facilities as soon as possible

CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal also reviewed the progress reports of all the departments regarding the infrastructure facilities being provided by them. The CM directed all officers of the concerned departments to provide the basic facilities in the flats as soon as possible, so that the families who shift to the flats do not face any kind of problem. The departments will expedite work on providing facilities like electricity, water, sewer connections and ensuring superior road quality so that these families can adopt a good standard of living.

Dwellers will lead a dignified life, everyday life will not be affected

Thousands of families have been living in slums in Delhi for years. These families have also taken up employment near their place of residence. Some families work in nearby factories, while some families are making ends meet as street vendors and hawkers. Their children study in schools around the area and their day-to-day needs are also available nearby. Apart from this, while living in slums these families have developed a familial bond and fight through all pains and sorrows. The Kejriwal Government believes that if these families are shifted from slums to a pucca house, then their employment will be harmed and they will face a livelihood crisis. Children will also have to shift schools. These families will have to worry about meeting their daily needs. This is why the government has decided that all the families should be given pucca houses right where they have their slums, so that their daily life is not affected and all the people can live a dignified life.
