In another bid to ransack Delhi further and make the lives of people in East Delhi a living hell, the BJP has proposed the establishment of a new landfill site, thereby endangering lives and the environment yet again. Condemning this action of the BJP-ruled MCD, AAP Senior Leader and MCD In-Charge Shri Durgesh Pathak stated – BJP has requested the Central Government for land at the Ghazipur Paper Mill to create a new destination for Delhi’s waste. It is deeply unfortunate that after gifting Delhi the 3 ginormous and hazardous landfills in Ghazipur, Okhla, and Bhalswa, BJP wants to add another to its list. Back in 2017, Manoj Tiwari had promised that if voted to power in the MCD, the BJP would get rid of all three landfills within a year, which they clearly failed to deliver. People living near landfills face numerous issues from stench to health hazards, but the BJP is not concerned at all. AAP Senior Leader and MCD In-Charge Shri Durgesh Pathak said, “People in Delhi often raise the question of how AAP has accused BJP on so many accounts, and that we should share at least one example of what the BJP has done for the people of Delhi, of its achievements in the MCD. Over the past 15 years, the BJP-ruled MCD has secured three major accomplishments or gifts for the people of Delhi, which are the 3 colossal landfill sites at Bhalswa, Okhla, and Ghazipur. These gifts by the BJP are the prime examples of their flagrant corruption and sheer incompetence. The BJP has made countless false promises concerning the disposal of these three sites. In 2017, Manoj Tiwari stated that if voted to power in the MCD, their party will get rid of all three of these landfills within a year, and will not leave any trace of garbage in these areas. This was the declaration the BJP had made in their manifesto as a promise to the people of Delhi. However, it is deeply unfortunate that instead of working on the disposal of the existing landfill sites, the BJP has asked the Central Government for another stretch of land in Delhi for a new landfill site. This land belongs to the Ghazipur Paper Mill, for which they have requested the DDA to establish a fourth landfill site in Delhi.”
He added, “The Ghazipur landfill yet again caught fire yesterday, and the burning has not stopped since, causing the people there a great deal of inconvenience and frustration. The entire area has been engulfed in smoke from the uncontrollable fire. Despite being aware of such a distressing situation, the BJP is so shameless that it has gone ahead and sought permission for a new landfill site. When there already exist 3 hazardous landfills in Delhi, one of which is burning and causing harm to a large number of people and animals, as well as the environment, it is unreasonable, inexplicable, and a complete betrayal against the people of Delhi for the BJP to establish another such site. I highly doubt there is a government as shameless and inefficient as the BJP-ruled MCD in the entire world. All the money which was allocated for the disposal of the existing landfills has already been squandered by BJP and its councillors. And now they have the audacity to build yet another one of these hazardous landfills. The Aam Aadmi Party will not stand for this. We will protest against this blatant misgovernance of the BJP’s with full force. If each of us has to take to the streets of Delhi to oppose this, we will willingly do so, we will launch a large agitation against the BJP if it does not take this preposterous proposal of theirs back.”
AAP MCD Co-Incharge Shri Deepak Singla said, “I have been living in East Delhi for the past 30 years, and I have grown up witnessing the changes that have taken place in the area, which was initially progressing. However, over the past 15 years since the BJP has come to power in the MCD, not a single change has been made for the development of the region. On the contrary, in fact, the BJP has been hell bent on ransacking all of East Delhi. They have already failed to control the abominable landfill in Ghazipur, which continues to expand in height and expanse. Whenever one enters Delhi from NH-24, the first site they see is MCD’s beloved Taj Mahal which is the Ghazipur landfill. Instead of working on a plan to dispose this gigantic landfill which is an embarrassment to the entire state of Delhi, and which is something Manoj Tiwari had ensured to deliver by 2018, the BJP has taken its incompetence to a new level and demanded a new area for another landfill.”
He continued, “All those living in the locality of these landfills, especially within the 2-4 kilometre radius, face a great deal of inconvenience in the form of stench, unhygienic atmosphere, fires breaking out, and overall health hazards. The residents in these areas have approached us with their grievances, stating how their neighbourhood has become nearly inhospitable due to the insufferable environment created by these landfills. Hence, these landfills must be completely eradicated. But unfortunately, the BJP is so preoccupied and drenched in corruption from head to toe, that it has stopped listening to people’s problems, and could not be less bothered to clean up the mess it has created. We, at the Aam Aadmi Party, completely oppose the establishment of another landfill which will make the lives of Delhi residents even worse. We will not let the BJP go through with this plan of theirs and strongly urge them to put an end to their series of corruption and misgovernance, as well as dispose of all three landfills at the earliest.”
