Kejriwal Government to constitute Selection Committee to pick 5 markets for world-class redevelopment as part of Phase One
NEW DELHI
The Delhi Government’s ambitious Iconic Market Redevelopment initiative has received an overwhelming response from Market Associations across Delhi. About 50 Market Associations representing all major markets in Delhi have come forward and applied to get their markets selected for redevelopment. Last month, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Manish Sisodia met with the members of 40 market associations of the national capital. The meeting was called upon to take the suggestions of the businessmen for the redevelopment of iconic markets of the city.
Right after the meeting, the Kejriwal Government invited applications from the Market Associations seeking details about the market and the existing problems in the markets. The last date for receiving applications from market associations was 6th May 2022. As applications close, the government has now initiated the process of evaluating these applications and selecting the top 5 markets.
The Market Associations have received this initiative with great enthusiasm and are very keen to get their market selected. All major markets of Delhi have now seeked help from the government for their redevelopment. With a special focus on generating more employment, Kejriwal Government will be shortlisting 5 iconic markets across Delhi and will redesign, decongest and redevelop these markets in order to increase the business opportunities and in turn the jobs generated in these markets.
Salient features of the redevelopment plan
The selected markets will be developed as Model Markets and will incorporate the best practices across the world. Redevelopment of the physical infrastructure of the selected markets will be done by deploying the best-in-class architectural firms. The architectural firms will be engaged with a design competition. Special attention will be paid on enhancing the ease of buying and selling by developing state-of-art roads, revamping the electrical lines, sewage pipelines, parking area, decongestion of roads and traffic, pedestrian friendly footpaths, easing the accessibility to the markets. Focus will be given on developing the influence zone around the market to ensure maximum convenience to the customers as well as the sellers. Extensive branding and marketing will be done for these model markets, helping them gain recognition all over the world
Road ahead
The Delhi Government plans to set up a selection committee to evaluate the applications received and carefully select 5 markets to be redeveloped. In the process of redevelopment, support and cooperation is expected from the market associations so that maximum benefit is availed by the businesses operating in these markets. Once selected these markets will be carefully studied and surveyed to understand the major issues that need to be resolved and then plans for their redevelopment will be laid down.
