DJB to construct interceptor sewer at the mouth of Barapullah drain and divert the sewage to Okhla STP for treatment

Water Minister and Delhi Jal Board Chairman Shri Satyendar Jain, convened a board meeting with the members of DJB today. Four major decisions were taken in the meeting that will pave the path for cleaning the Yamuna river. A total of 575 kilometres of sewer line will be laid in the unauthorised group of colonies of Delhi. This project aims to connect all the sewage generated from the different colonies of Delhi to get treated in the Sewage Treatment Plant. It will be one of the largest projects ever undertaken on such a large scale by the Delhi government. This project will lead to the timely collection and treatment of sewage, which will help in the cleaning of the Yamuna. In addition to the above, DJB also approved the construction of a pumping station at the starting point of the Barapula drain, which is one of the four major drains falling into the River Yamuna. The drain will be trapped and diverted to Okhla Sewage Treatment Plant for treatment. Okhla STP already has a surplus capacity to treat the drain water. The board meeting held on Thursday also approved the work of construction of a 60 MGD sewage pumping station that will be constructed at Kilokari. This will resolve the issue of sewage overflowing in many parts of Delhi. The Delhi Jal Board also approved the upgradation of an old Sewage Treatment Plant of 10 MGD capacity at Yamuna Vihar to 15 MGD capacity using new technology at a cost of Rs 78 crores. The project will be completed in one year and will be able to handle additional wastewater flowing in the drain which would otherwise flow into the Yamuna.
Shri Satyendar Jain, said, “In the last 50 years, several governments came into power, but not even one really worked on the ground level issues of cleaning the Yamuna, but we are committed to doing so and are therefore working rigorously day and night in this direction. Therefore we are improving the sewage networks of Delhi day by day.”
He further added, “The Kejriwal government is aiming to connect all the colonies with sewage treatment plants to restrict sewage water from falling directly into the drains, which will further help to clean the Yamuna in coming years.”
Kejriwal Government is all set to lay a 575 KM sewer line in Shahbad Group of Colonies
In continuation of strengthening the capital’s drainage system, a 575km long sewer line is being laid down in Shahbad group of colonies, Sangam Vihar group of colonies, Jafarpur group of colonies, Galibpur group of colonies, Sarangpur group of colonies, Goyal Vihar group of colonies, Kilokri group of colonies, Kanganheri group of colonies and Dichaol group of colonies. This project aims to connect all the sewage generated from all these colonies of Delhi to get treated in the Sewage Treatment Plants. It will be one of the biggest projects ever to install the sewer lines that are being done by the Delhi government on such a large scale. Previously all the sewage that was generated before goes straight to the drain but after the installation of the sewer lines all the sewage will go to STPs and get treated and all the drains will receive treated water which will ultimately help in cleaning of the river Yamuna.
A new drain interceptor sewer is being built in Barapulla
To improve the collection and treatment of sewage Delhi Jal Board will build an interceptor sewer from Barapullah drain to Batla House phase-II.
The Board approved the construction of this interceptor sewer from Barapullah drain to Batla House phase-II, including its rising main up to the Okhla Waste Water Treatment Plant, at a cost of Rs 177.04 crore. Currently, untreated wastewater of about 35 MGD is flowing into the Barapullah drain, Maharani Bagh drain, and sewage of Taimoor Nagar, Khizrabad and Batla House Phase-II outfalls into the Yamuna River. To overcome this issue, an interceptor sewer along the floodplain up to 35 MGD SPS at Dhobi Ghat, Batla House, Okhla, will then be pumped to Okhla Sewer Treatment Plant. The completion of the work will help in providing hygienic conditions for the surroundings. This interceptor sewer will also be utilised for trapping balanced flow in the Maharani Bagh drain, thereby providing relief to the already stressed CV Raman trunk sewer. Additionally, 8 MGD discharge from Taimoor Nagar, Khizrabad Batla House, phase 2, Okhla, will also outfall into this interceptor sewer.
DJB to come up with a 60 MGD sewage pumping station at Kilokari
The Board approved the construction of a 27.2 crore liters capacity sewage pumping station and other related work on design, building and operations at Kilokari, New Delhi. The design of the existing 80-year-old Kilokali SPS has outlived its useful life and thus will be upgraded and built in vacant land nearby the old Sewage Treatment Plant. This SPS will be considered as the vital installation in nature having round the clock pumping and catering to the discharge of catchment area of central & south Delhi i.e Diplomatic enclave, Sarojni Nagar, R.K Puram, Shahjahan road, Lodhi road, Jor bagh, Jangpura extension, Safdarjung railway station, Kotla Mubarakpur, south extension, defence colony & Lajpat Nagar area through two incoming trunk sewer. Further, these SPS pumps the sewage into gravity ducts, which eventually falls at Okhla STP where this sewage will get treated. This project will help in treating the sewage water coming from south Delhi which will be beneficial for cleaning the river Yamuna. The total cost of the project is approx. Rs 173 crore with an O&M for 10 years.
Being one of the very crucial installations and working round the clock pumping & catering the discharge of catchment area of Central and South Delhi, hence, this new 27.2 crore litres Sewage Pumping Station shall be connected efficiently and pumped into to 1200 mm dia new rising mains up to the start point of the Gravity Ducts in Jal Vihar complex which are out falling at Okhla Sewage Treatment Plant.
DJB to upgrade Yamuna Vihar existing 10 MGD STP capacity to 15 MGD
DJB approved the rehabilitation and up-gradation of the existing 10 MGD Sewage Treatment Plant Phase-II at Yamuna Vihar, Delhi. The existing plant was constructed in 2003 on a biochemical oxygen demand of 30/50 mg/L and is now lying defunct due to old treatment technology. This sewage was diverted to the newly commissioned 25 MGD STP Phase -III for better effluent standards.
After rehabilitation of this existing phase II Sewage Treatment Plant, to the latest effluent standards that are biochemical oxygen demand and TSS10/10 mg/litre. Integrated fixed/film activated sludge technology will be used as it requires less area, less power consumption and less completion time for upgrading. Thus, technology provides additional biomass within a wastewater treatment facility in order to meet stringent effluent parameters or increased loadings without the direct need for additional tankage.
On completion of this project, it will help in strengthening the existing wastewater management infrastructure and will lead to abatement of pollution from River Yamuna.
