To pay tribute to the legendary environmentalist Padma Vibhushan Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna, the face of the famous Chipko Movement and also known as Himalaya Rakshak, a cultural program was organised in the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Manish Sisodia said that — Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna is a role model for today’s youth, who devoted his whole life to the protection of the environment. Today he is not with us in-person, but he will always be associated with our lives through his work, personality, and ideals.

Shri Sisodia said that the entire life of Sunderlal Bahuguna and his sacrifice for the society and environment would be an inspiration for the generations to come. His whole life was full of struggles, but by dedicating everything, he kept working for the society with a smile on his face. He was a source of inspiration not only for Uttarakhand’s residents but for all Indians.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that we need to learn from Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna’s legacy that self-indulgence will not work in life, it is the environment which will always be beneficial for us. He said that every picture of the nation-builders in Delhi Assembly including Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna shows us their sacrifices towards the nation.

Assembly Speaker Shri Ram Niwas Goel said that the manner in which Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna worked for the country, the society, and to save the environment, made him immortal. He said that this program could not be organised in December due to COVID, but in the coming time a grand program would be organised in the memory of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna in Delhi. He said that the Delhi government respects the culture and people of Uttarakhand, in this direction, we appeal to the people of Uttarakhand and all the people of Delhi to celebrate the birth anniversary of the icon of Uttarakhand, Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna, on the lines of Gandhi Jayanti.

It is noteworthy that in this program the family members of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna were honoured by the Delhi Government. His son and senior journalist Rajeev Nayan Bahuguna, along with Harish Awasthi, Uttarakhand Academy Secretary Jitram Bhatt, and Uttarakhand Academy’s Vice-President M.S. Rawat were present at the event among others.
