On June 15, 2021 our Hon’ble Prime Minister Modi launched the “Prime Minister’s Scheme for Young, Upcoming and Versatile Authors” (PM-YUVA). The scheme is a mentorship programme to upskill young authors.
The scheme is aimed at training 75 aspiring writers below 30 years, who are ready to express themselves and project India and its culture and literature globally. A consolidated scholarship of Rs. 50,000 per month for a period of six months per author will be paid under the mentorship scheme. The link to the website is: https://innovateindia.mygov.in/yuva/.
In this context, for a developing country like India, which tops the world chart in the youth population, we have a lot of potential ready to be tapped into and utilized for capacity and nation-building. This demographic dividend propositions our country and its economy a unique advantage. Thereby the scheme would intend to tutor a new generation of young creative writers, there is an impending requirement to take initiatives at the highest level, under the visionary national level flagship programme of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”.
In essence, the scheme envisages cultivating modern ambassadors of Indian literature as the country heads towards 75 years of independence@2022. In such parameters, our country is gradedat 3rd in the arena of book publishing. In this vein, this scheme will help not only progress a stream of writers who can write on variety of subjects to encourage Indian heritage, culture and knowledge, but also offer a “creative space” to ambitious youths to articulate themselves in their mother tongue and embody India at a global level.
In conclusion, it can be said that this programme is in tune with our Hon’ble PM’s vision of Global Citizen and for re-launching India as “Vishwa Guru”. The author works as a Ph.D. Research Scholar at the Department of Anthropology, University of Calcutta, and the co-author of the book Anthropology For All (2021).
