NEW DELHI
The Delhi Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Environment heavily came down on East MCD officials and BJP leaders for repeatedly suffocating the residents of the state. The Committee’s Chairperson, MLA Ms Atishi questioned the intentions of BJP’s leadership of the MCD and accused it of endangering lives of innocent citizens for political gains. She stated — BJP’s MCD Mayor confirms corruption in the civic body by not letting officials submit details & documents about the Ghazipur Landfill. East MCD Officials have gone on record to state that the Mayor has barred them from submitting any document to the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The BJP Mayor knows how much money has been squandered in the name of Ghazipur Landfill & solid waste management. BJP’s Mayor isn’t ready to submit details about the garbage management contract & tender to the Delhi Legislative Assembly to hide his corruption. BJP’s scams and corruption are the real reasons behind the Ghazipur Landfill’s huge garbage mountain. Symbolic of BJP’s 15 year long rule of the MCD, the Ghazipur Landfill has caught fire thrice this month.
MLA Ms Atishi said, “The Ghazipur landfill site, which is one of the significant gifts that the BJP led MCD has given to the people of Delhi in the past 15 years, is catching fire time and again. 3 major fires have broken out at the site in the past one month. The residents living in nearby localities have been put in harm’s way due to the hazardous fumes and the smoke which has engulfed the surroundings. Moreover, Delhi’s air is also getting affected severely, with pollution levels rising due to the toxic smoke particles. These fire breakouts have become more frequent due to the BJP-ruled MCD’s failure to ensure proper waste management and disposal of the landfill, because it is busy squandering money into its leaders’ pockets.”
She continued, “The BJP-led East MCD has signed various contracts with private companies for waste management and disposal of the Ghazipur landfill, claiming to work towards reducing the height of the hazardous landfill and recycling of waste before its arrival at the landfill through waste-to-energy plants. However, the harsh reality is that every single contract that the BJP has signed in the name of waste management is tainted with corruption, and today it is trying its level best to hide these scams. The Delhi Vidhan Sabha’s Environment Committee summoned East MCD officers to answer why the fire accidents are increasing. It asked the officers to present documents regarding EDMC’s deal with private companies, in order to find out why no improvement is being seen in the Ghazipur landfill situation despite these contracts.”
She added, “When we demanded these papers be presented in front of the Environment Committee, the East MCD failed to deliver. Following the first summons, Delhi Vidhan Sabha sent a reminder to the EDMC officers and the Commissioner, to which they responded with a list of website links saying that only the documents available on their website will be shared. They added that they do not have permission from the East MCD Mayor to share the rest of the documents with the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. It is clear from this that BJP’s mayor is busy trying to hide their corruption because he is aware of the crores which have been squandered by BJP leaders and councillors in collusion with the private players in the name of disposal of the Ghazipur landfill. But, in reality, none of these changes are taking place; the height of the landfill has been consistently increasing, and so are the incidents of fire.”
Ms Atishi concluded, “The sole reason behind the Ghazipur landfill problems not being solved is BJP’s reckless corruption and misgovernance. Today, the BJP mayor is doing his level best to hide their corruption scandals from the public eye. They are refusing to present documents regarding the waste management system in Ghazipur including tenders, contracts, accounts of money allocated to private companies because there is a massive scam that the BJP has caused in the disposal plan of the landfill, which it is now trying to cover.”
