Having realised it is in its last few weeks in power, the BJP has gone on a rampage to sell public assets to bankrupt the MCD and earn riches itself. Today, AAP Senior Leaders and MLAs Smt Bandana Kumari and Shri Vishesh Ravi informed that the BJP-ruled MCD is selling away a primary school in Shalimar Bagh to build a commercial parking. MLA Bandana Kumari stated — The BJP is not just selling the MCD school at throwaway prices but also awarding the parking contract to its own people. Despite being well aware that the market rate of the land is 250 crores and its commercial rate is 500 crores the BJP is selling the school for a mere 126 crores. BJP wants to rob off the MCD of all its assets so its politicians and leaders can amass ill gotten wealth at the cost of the taxpayer. Senior AAP Leader and MLA Smt Bandana Kumari, said, “The BJP ruled MCD is selling a primary school in SC Block, Shalimar Bagh, to private developers and mafia to build a parking lot and commercial complex. Imagine how low can the BJP stoop if it wants to build a parking complex on the site of a primary school. We raised concerns about this proposal, however on the 15th of December, BJP reintroduced it as ‘item 113’ in the Standing Committee and refused to reject the proposal to create a parking complex. The residents are really upset because of this, and our local colleagues from that area come to our office and tell us that the MCD, which is allowing the construction of a parking complex on the land of a school for small children, is being met with continuous criticism. I’ve learned that this site in Shalimar Bagh would be allocated to BJP contractors, and it is at their behest that the MCD has razed a primary school and proposed a parking complex in its place. The locals of Shalimar Bagh vehemently opposed this.”
She added, “Because they know that AAP would win all three MCDs in the future elections, BJP is currently selling valuable government property to its colleagues. BJP is offering all the MCD properties for sale at throwaway prices. They are selling the Shalimar Bagh plot for a mere 126 crores when its commercial value is over 500 crores. But today, BJP-ruled MCD wants to sell that property for a pittance to line its coffers and to fill the homes of its colluders, and despite this, BJP continues to refuse to pay salaries to MCD employees. The residents of Shalimar Bagh, SC Block, want the school to stay. They don’t want a parking lot, especially a commercial one. Whatever MCD is doing now to help some BJP colleagues should be stopped as soon as possible.”
At the same time AAP Senior Leader and MLA Shri Vishesh Ravi said, “MCD has sold the site of two schools in Karol Bagh and has stolen more than half of the land of a school currently running in the Pusa Lane just so it can build a parking project. It has now proposed a parking project in the place of a primary school in a residential area in Shalimar Bagh. All three projects follow a similar pattern — they’ve been constructed such that shops will be developed on the majority of the land and a small parking lot will be made on the remaining land. This shows that MCD’s true aim is not to construct parking here. They are not doing this to provide parking facilities to the citizens of Delhi. In truth, BJP’s true love, its contractors and mafias will be hired to build stores as part of these projects, and the BJP’s goal is to take money from them under the table in order to cheat the public.”
He continued, “They started surface parking on Ajmal Khan Road two years ago after closing a school there, and now they’re introducing a parking complex project there. As of now, there are 300-400 vehicles that can be parked there. Ironically, once this project is completed, there will only be space for 300 vehicles.Why does the public have to suffer if the parking space for vehicles is going to remain the same? Why do the poor children have to be thrown out of schools for this? BJP’s doing this because the contractor to whom they are awarding these contracts would construct shops and shopping complexes in exchange for ill gotten wealth for BJP politicians and corrupt officials in MCD.”
He added, “This project is being developed in a residential area. This will cause the closure of one major MCD school. According to the Right to Education Act, every child must live within a kilometre of a primary school, making it easy for them to get to school. But, if schools in these areas close, where will the children who live there go to school? In this way, the MCD and BJP officials are supporting private schools by gradually closing government schools. They are kicking the poor out of government schools, so that government schools can be locked. They want the land to build parking complexes there. All they see in this is an immoral and corrupt way to gain crores of rupees. They can’t see that poor people’s children will have to go to private schools and pay high fees because of them.”
He said, “So many press conferences have been conducted on this issue, and so many newspapers have reported this. There have even been protests in these areas, but these BJP leaders are not backing down because they want to sell as much land as possible before the elections. They are selling whatever property they can. This government-owned land belongs to the people of Delhi, and it should be used to provide them with facilities. Despite several complaints and demonstrations, the BJP refuses to stop, leaving us with one option. Our President owns all the lands in our country, and he has the right to decree on it. He is our last resort. With folded hands, we implore the President to intervene and stop the BJP from selling off public land, heritage buildings, schools, and commercial complexes owned collectively by the people of Delhi. We appeal to him to take notice of this critical situation and put a stop to the BJP’s immoral acts.”
