NEW DELHI:

To provide world class education to children from all sections of society in Delhi, the Kejriwal government had started Schools of Specialized Excellence (SoSEs) last year. Following the extremely successful first year, 11 new SoSEs have been added to the list and now their numbers have increased to 31. These schools provide specialized education in 5 areas which include Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities, Performing and Visual Arts, High-end 21st century skills and Armed Forces Preparatory School. The process of admission for the new session has started in these schools now. Students can apply for admission in class 9th in their preferred domain till February 28. Along with this, admissions will also be taken in class 11th in STEM and Armed Forces Preparatory School this year. Students willing to take admissions can reach out to the admission help desk set up at their nearest SoSE.

How are SoSEs different from other schools?

SoSEs started by Delhi Government provides the students with world class infrastructure and faculty for new age curriculum and learning in specialized domains. High quality specialized education is ensured here through partnerships with expert institutes of global repute. SOSE provides opportunities for experiential learning to the students through projects, field visits, internships, etc. in the subjects of their choice and interest. Along with holistic development of the students here, they are given training to achieve success in their chosen specialized area. SoSE provides focused preparation opportunities to students to get admission in the top universities and build new age careers.

Knowledge partnership with globally renowned institutions

The Delhi government has partnered with globally renowned institutions to provide world class education to children in SoSEs. These institutions include International Baccalaureate (IB), Australian Council for Educational Research, Boston Consulting Group, , Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Delhi, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Vidyamandir Classes, National School of Drama (NSD), Global Music Institute, Lend-a-Hand India, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, etc. These institutions will help SoSEs in preparing children for higher education institutions and aspirational career opportunities by providing world class education.

Armed Forces Preparatory School will prepare children to serve the nation

Armed Forces Preparatory School has also been included in SoSE this year. Its objective is to prepare students who dream of serving the nation by becoming officers in the Indian armed forces. In this session, admission will be taken for Class 9 and 11 in AFPS.

Spread over an area of 14 acres in Jharoda Kalan, AFPS will be a residential school, where along with studies, students will be provided rigorous training to prepare them for joining Indian armed forces.

All SoSEs affiliated with Delhi Board of School Education

All Schools of Specialized Excellence are affiliated with Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE). It aims to move away from rote learning methods and integrate the assessment into their day-to-day teaching-learning practice. Here, students will not be assessed on the basis of ‘three hours written examination’ conducted at the end of a year. At SoSEs, teachers follow assessment practices throughout the year and help students improve their learning levels. Notably, DBSE is equivalent to CBSE board or any other board of education in India and students having certificates from DBSE are eligible for admission in any University.

Eligibility criteria amended to provide opportunities to all children

An important change has been made in the eligibility criteria for the admission in SoSEs. Mental and emotional wellbeing of children has been affected due to COVID in recent times. This has also impacted the results of children. Thus Delhi government has removed the requirement of minimum marks in the previous class from the eligibility criteria. Following this more students will be able to apply for admissions in SoSEs.

How to get admission in SoSE?

All the Delhi students who are residents of Delhi and study in any recognized school in Delhi can take admission in SoSE with a valid address proof of Delhi. For admission, the candidate will have to register at edudel.nic.in/sose and apply for SoSE of his/her choice. The last date of application in SoSE is February 28. Admission help desks have also been set up in all SoSEs to help the children during the entire admission process. After applying, the shortlisted candidates will have to appear for an aptitude test. Based on their performance in the aptitude test, they will be offered admission.

Notably, within a few weeks of opening registrations, SoSEs have received more than 7500 applications.
