NEW DELHI:

Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party went on hunger strike today in protest of East MCD Mayor Shyam Sundar Agarwal’s anti-people attitude. As per AAP councillor Rekha Dixit, “The mayor first signed and approved on one road naming application. But when we asked for permission to place the sign stone calling the street Guru Nanak Marg, he flatly refused to sign it. We decided to go on an indefinite hunger strike at the East MCD headquarters under the leadership of our LOP Shri Manoj Tyagi. We also held a kirtan during this time. Shri Manoj Tyagi, LOP of East MCD said that at 4:30 PM, two municipal councillors, Deepak Malhotra and Sandeep Kapoor, arrived on behalf of the mayor. They asked for the file, and got the process done. So, in the end, the Aam Aadmi Party triumphed, and the Mayor was forced to submit to our protests.

AAP Councillor Rekha Dixit from Anarkali Ward 22E said, “On February 20, 2022, the name of a street in Anarkali Ward 22E was decided to be as Guru Nanak Marg. On 10 February 2022, Mayor of East MCD Shyam Sundar Agarwal signed and passed the ‘Naming of the Road’ documents. Following that, the Assistant Engineer prepared the file for the naming ceremony and had it signed by all of the officers and commissioners. The file for calling the street Guru Nanak Marg on a sign stone was sent to the East MCD Mayor for final approval on February 17, 2022. Surprisingly, the Mayor declined to sign this final document.”

She continued, “Officials from the corporation informed the mayor that all preparations for the naming inauguration had been completed only with his approval. Even after being aware of this, the mayor remained deafeningly silent. As a result, the naming of Guru Nanak Marg in Anarkali Ward 22E was postponed until February 20. But we were not among those who were going to sit quietly. In response, we held a hunger strike at the East Delhi Municipal Corporation headquarters today under the leadership of AAP LOP Shri Manoji Tyagi. We had decided not to eat or drink anything until Mayor Shyam Sunder Agarwal signed the file.”

AAP’s Leader of Opposition of East MCD Shri Manoj Tyagi said, “When an employee from my office and a colleague of mine presented the Guru Nanak Marg file to the Mayor, he refused to sign it. In contrast, the Mayor had granted permission for the naming of Guru Nanak Marg in the Anarkali Ward in front of me. During the final permission, he not only refused to sign the file, but he threw it at his PA and stated that this would not pass. The file was returned to the employee who had taken it from my office.

He added, “In all MCD houses, the mayor gives his approval to the naming of as many as 50. However, the BJP Mayor’s refusal to approve the naming of the road in the name of Guru Nanak ji clearly demonstrated that he is anti-people, dictatorial, anti-employee, and undemocratic. At the same time, his anti-Sikh sentiment is palpable at the least. That is why I went on hunger strike today until Mayor Sahib signed the file to name the street Guru Nanak Ji Marg. Finally, at 4:30 PM, two municipal councillors, Deepak Malhotra and Sandeep Kapoor, arrived on the mayor’s behalf. They asked us to hand over our file, which was then signed. In the end, the Aam Aadmi Party triumphed, and the Mayor was forced to submit to our protest.”

On this occasion, Aam Aadmi Party leaders Shravan Dixit, Kshitij Sharma, Vijay, Mandeep Singh, Gagandeep Singh Wrinkle, Preetpal Singh Kaka, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Kavita Sirohi, Pandit Sanjeev Sharma, Ajay Madhok, Rajinder Singh, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Mayank Vashist, Sukhwinder Singh, Abhinav Talwar, Ishpal Singh Pali, Karamjit Singh, Nisha, Uma Khanna, Mumtaz, Anita Hakam, Gurpreet Singh Suri, Chandan Gambhir, Harmeet Singh, Sukhman Singh, Baljinder Singh, Gurpreet Singh Kohli, Jaspreet Singh Kohli, Bharti, Shiv Prakash Tiwari, Neeraj Talwar among others were present.
