New Delhi:

In yet another landmark achievement, Kejriwal government inducted 100 more new low-floor AC CNG buses to its public transportation fleet and a new electric bus, taking the total number of buses in the public transportation fleet to 7001, a feat which had never been achieved in Delhi’s history. Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot flagged off these buses from DTC Indraprastha Depot today along with other officials of the transport department, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and DIMTS (Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) Ltd. The inducted buses will run from Ghumanhera Depot to various transit centres in Delhi such as New Delhi Railway Station, Anand Vihar ISBT etc. providing convenience to Delhi citizens. With the induction of these 100 low floor AC CNG buses and one electric bus, the total number of buses in Delhi has increased to an all-time high of 7001. Prior to this, Delhi had crossed the 6,000 buses mark in the bus fleet during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Delhi Government is committed towards taking the bus transport system of Delhi and its frequency to the highest standards to aid public mobility. Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot said that Delhi’s buses now stand out as an example of a safe, accessible, and convenient transport system in the country.

During the event, Transport Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot said, “More than 30 lac people travelled in DTC and Cluster buses every day in the month of Feb 2022 which is nearly 14% of NCT population. Today is not just about adding a few hundred more buses, but about achieving another milestone in Delhi’s governance. Delhi’s public bus fleet, for the first time ever, has crossed the 7000 mark! Our buses have become an example of safe, convenient & affordable transport! We will continue adding to this number, with 2000+ electric buses joining our fleet in the coming year. I dedicate all these new buses to the citizens of Delhi and urge Delhiites to reduce usage of your private vehicles and shift to public transport for a pollution and congestion free Delhi”.

On the eve of International Women’s day, the Minister also addressed the women conductors and Marshals in Delhi government’s bus fleet and for their contribution to making Delhi’s buses safer for women. Delhi government had also recently relaxed height and experience criteria for female Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) licence holders for allowing more entry of women drivers into the DTC fleet. Delhi government had also announced that the fee for training of women HMV drivers will be fully borne by the government.

In January 2022 itself, the Delhi Government added more than 200+ new buses to its transportation fleet including 2 new Electric buses which are emission free and help with pollution reduction. Further, in a bid to bolster public transport, Delhi Government will be adding more CNG and Electric buses at a large scale. To ensure safety and convenience, all these buses come with features such as real time tracking, CCTV, Panic button and differently abled friendly ramp etc. In addition to this, 500 more buses, both electric and CNG have already been awarded and will be inducted in the coming months, The Delhi Transport Department (DTC) board had also in the last month approved the procurement of 1500 e-buses through FAME Scheme. Delhi Govt has also planned to induct additional 1000 e-buses in DTC fleet and 240 e-buses in cluster fleet respectively in lieu of retiring fleet. The department is also in the process of electrification of all its existing and new depots to accommodate these new buses.
