Innovative Ideas of Delhi Government Schools
Garden of 5 senses
Baba Nanhe Nath Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalya Khera Kalan 130032 was awarded as one of the best government schools of Delhi for its innovative idea of “Garden of Five Senses”. The concept of this idea is to create an activity garden where children can learn subjects like space, nature, science and mathematics through play. The garden was developed with the seed money of Rs 25000 received as state award. The unique fact about this garden is that it has been created by teachers and principal on their own, be it a huge rocket model, magnetic levitation model or life size animal sculptures. The garden applies the multi-sensory approach to enhance the learning levels of students.
Innovative Mathematics Teaching Methods
Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Roop Nagar was awarded for introducing innovative mathematics teaching methods. The school has been teaching mathematics to its students through fashion shows, dance, food preparation and rangoli. There are a lot of prejudices in society regarding mathematics. For example, mathematics is very difficult, it is very boring, it is monotonous, it takes a lot of brain to read and understand mathematics. Many parents feel that a tutor is very important to study maths well. Breaking all these prejudices, all phobias, boredom towards Maths, this Roopnagar School has adopted very easy, simple, interesting, creative and such local methods of teaching mathematics in which children can happily understand mathematics and it does not hinder their further studies.
Creating heaven for Birds
Houses in Sultanpuri are really small and greenery is also very less. This led to extinction of birds from the area. But students and staff of Government Girls Senior Secondary Schools, Sultanpuri were determined to bring them back. Apart from various activities to spread awareness about birds, especially sparrows, students of school worked towards creating birdhouses and feeders in school. As a result birds landed on trees in schools to build their abode. Even during COVID lockdown they continued this practice and provided shelter to many birds in the locality. This has increased the number of birds in the area now. School was awarded for this initiative.
Along with this, the school resolved the issues of children through “Samadhan ka Pitara” where students were asked to drop chits by writing their concerns. And then teachers resolved these concerns through individual discussions, group activities and play.
Reading Room as a stress buster
Principal of Sarvodaya Co-ed Vidyalaya, Sec. 8, Rohini, Awdhesh Kumar Jha had been receiving many cases of students where they were not able to study properly due to the non conducive environment at their homes. They did not have appropriate resources to prepare for competitive exams too. So when school infrastructure was developed and it was provided with 108 class rooms, teachers and the principal of the school combined two classrooms to convert it into a hall. It was named Shobhit Reading Room. The room remains open for 365 days, from 8am to 8pm for students who want to study and prepare for competitions after school hours. It has proper desks, benches, computers and preparatory books for students to provide them a suitable environment to study.
Along with this, on observing the stress among students in the post COVID scenario, the school has created a stress buster room where students share their stress related issues with friends and teachers and together find the solutions for them.
Sikkim in Delhi Government School
Students of RSBV, Surajmal Vihar had been working on art integrated projects introduced by CBSE few months back, where they were asked to work on various projects related to Unity in Diversity in India and “One India, Supreme India”. Thereafter, Principal of school Bharat Chand Thakur got to know about a project on state Sikkim by one of the teachers in school. Being impressed by the concept he ordered this to be implemented as a “project of the school”. Hence it was decided that students will paint a corner of the school with the features of state Sikkim. All the painting instruments were provided by the school and students converted a corner of the school into Sikkim.
Along with this school extensively worked on spreading the awareness about sparrows in the community.
Story Creators
Dr. Ritu Kumari, Principal SOSE Kalkaji said that, one day, I was doing a friendly interactive session with the students of Class 9th. When I questioned them about their everyday routine, it was observed that students spend most of their time on electronic gadgets. I asked them to write stories of their choice and next day we had many new stories. Students shared their experiences of writing and inventing stories. And thus we were able to bring out new talents of students- storytelling. We have continued this practice till date.
