NEW DELHI:

Deputy Chief Minister Shri Manish Sisodia said that India needs a focused and dedicated approach to achieve the goals set by the National Education Policy 2020 and provide quality education to every child. We need to set our priorities for implementation of the policy successfully. He discussed the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) and Delhi Government’s approach towards implementing it. He said that the Kejriwal government is committed to provide world-class quality education to each and every child in Delhi, that can enable them to be emotionally, academically and professionally sound. Today, the Delhi education model is the most sought after education model in the country and this has been made possible by the clear vision and priorities set up by the Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal. Since 2015, the government has focused on setting benchmarks of quality education in the government schools, by providing state-of-the-art infrastructure to Delhi government schools, training teachers professionally at national/international level, implementing focused approaches to improve academics and providing a growth mindset to all stakeholders of the education system. Until the Kejriwal government came into power, ‘Education’ was never the agenda of elections across the nation and now each state wants a government which can work towards development of the education sector. Even political parties have started to give priority to education.

The Deputy Chief Minister addressed various stakeholders from the field of education at “ThinkEdu Conclave” on Tuesday.

He added that from infrastructure to inculcating growth mindset among students and other stakeholders, the Kejriwal government has been working on each component of the education system in a structured manner. The government was always sure what it wanted from education. And it began with increasing the education budget share to 25% in 2015.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that today all the Delhi government schools have been provided with the state-of-the art infrastructure, which includes smart classrooms, highly equipped laboratories, computer labs, montessori labs, and world-class sports facilities. This target was achieved with the little shift of budget here and there and giving priority to education.

Apart from this Delhi government has extensively worked on teacher training and Mindset curricula. We have ensured that our teachers in government schools get to know the world’s best education systems and learn from them. They are being trained through various international exchange programs and exposure visits to premier universities at national and international levels like IIMs, NIE Singapore, University of Cambridge, Harvard University etc. These exposures have changed their approach towards students and parents and have enhanced their professional skills. As an addition to this, the Kejriwal government has set up the Delhi Teachers University which will set new standards in the field of teacher education and will emerge as a global institution. Through this University our aim is to not only strengthen the in-house system but also provide aspiring teachers a platform to learn from the world’s best education systems along with regular courses. This will help us prepare teachers for the new era, he added.

Sharing about the Mindset curricula in Delhi government schools, Shri Sisodia said this is one of the most important steps that the Kejriwal Government has taken in the field of education. Our three curriculums- Happiness Curriculum, Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum and Deshbhakti curriculum, aim to develop social, emotional and professional abilities of students from the school level. Where Happiness curriculum aims to inculcate the abilities like self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, decision making and relationship skills; EMC prepares them to be risk takers and leaders of the future. Whereas, Deshbhakti curriculum aims to instill the spirit of patriotism and nationhood among every child studying in government schools. These efforts have received various international accolades too. These curriculums will prepare students to contribute towards the development of the nation.

Speaking of the Delhi government approach towards National Education Policy 2020, he said, over the years, several education policies have been made in India, but they have never been implemented properly. All the policies spoke of harmony, social emotional wellbeing of students and teachers, and innovative curriculums but none of the state or central government ever worked on implementing such things on ground. We need a focused and dedicated approach to achieve the goals set by the National Education Policy 2020. The Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi government has already taken the first step in this direction and aims to change the mindset of people towards education, especially the public education system, by providing them new options. Our efforts so far have helped in restoring the faith of common people in the public education system.

In future, along with maintaining the standards of the quality education system, the Kejriwal government is aiming to bring changes in the assessment systems. For this a new board has been set up, which will focus on assessing students round the year instead of three hours examination.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that an early investment in important components of Delhi education system such as infrastructure and training teachers on technological front has helped Delhi government  continue education of every child even during the unprecedented times of pandemic. Now that the schools are opened, the government is focusing on assessing the emotional and learning level of each and every child at government schools and will help them recover from the losses efficiently.
