NEW DELHI:

Under its vision for Delhi@2047 to make Delhi a modern, equitable and sustainable city, Delhi government’s think-tank, the Dialogue & Development Commission (DDC) today launched the Community Parks initiative to transform the neighbourhood parks of Delhi into modern, world class parks. The initiative will be a collaboration between DDC and Delhi Parks and Gardens Society (DPGS), RWAs and CSR/philanthropic organisations, and will work towards holistic transformation of 1000 community parks of Delhi in the next 5 years. The first set of parks will be set up with the support of ICICI Foundation, JK Cement and CII Delhi.

On the occasion of the launch, DDC Vice Chairperson, Shri Jasmine Shah said, “The Community Parks initiative is an important pillar of the Delhi@2047 initiative which was launched by CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal in August 2021. Being conceptualized and implemented by the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDCD), Delhi@2047 is an attempt to foster the government’s partnerships with the private sector (CSR initiatives) and philanthropic organizations to together achieve the vision of making Delhi an equitable, modern, sustainable and world class city by the 100th year of India’s independence.”

Under this partnership, a pilot project to establish a model for redevelopment of community parks will be undertaken by DDC in collaboration with the Delhi Parks and Garden Society (DPGS). Partnerships with philanthropists and corporates will enable the resources that are needed to transform basic parks facilities into modern, world class parks. These parks shall be designed as multi use spaces. The local communities would be involved in the design and development of these parks in order to ensure that they cater to the needs of diverse stakeholders.

The parks will have:
• Public conveniences including adequate lighting, CCTVs, toilets, etc.
• Dedicated play area for toddlers, children and adolescents with child-friendly play equipment, open air gyms, gazebos and covered seating area
• Walking, jogging and cycling tracks, open air gyms, water bodies
• Composting, rainwater harvesting, irrigation supply, power backup
• Native trees, flowers and shrubs

Ms Reena Gupta, Advisor to the Minister of Environment said, “Well-designed parks are spaces for culture, recreation, community development, heritage, health and wellness, economic development. Delhi Government recognizes the importance of green & open spaces for Delhi to become a world class city. For post-covid public life, parks far outvalue other public spaces as safe and inclusive havens for community, therefore the community parks initiatives is a key pillar of the Delhi@2047 initiative”.

Shri Saurabh Singh, President ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth said, “We are pleased to partner with Govt. of NCT of Delhi in the effort to improve ecology and water conservation projects of the Capital for the benefit of citizens of Delhi.”

Shri Madhav Singhania CEO JK Cement and Chairman CII Delhi said, “On behalf of JK Cement and CII, we are happy to partner with the DDC on the community parks initiative. This is a part of our sustainability initiative to Build Better Delhi: Delhi@2047 and to make our parks accessible to everyone

The community parks project would focus on making parks an inclusive space for everyone by consulting with different groups of citizens and involving them in the process. Currently, there is minimal involvement of local communities in management of parks but active participation will be ensured in designing and maintenance of the green spaces. These parks would not only improve the ecology but also the overall quality of life for the residents of Delhi.
