Imran Hussain emphasises on the need for expeditious disposal of pending cases with State Consumer Commission and District Consumer Commission

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Shri Imran Hussain reviewed the functioning of the Consumer Affairs Department, Delhi State Consumer Redressal Commission, and various District consumer commissions of the Delhi Government today.
The meeting was attended by the Commissioner (F&S) along with senior officers of the Consumer Affairs Department, Government of Delhi. The Consumer Affairs Department showcased a presentation before the F&S Minister regarding the performance of the department.
Shri Imran Hussain reviewed the progress and emphasised on the need for expeditious disposal of pending cases with State Consumer Commission and District Consumer Commission as all the commissions are now functioning with full strength.
The F&S Minister also reviewed pending cases and directed the Consumer Affairs Department to work harder for the protection of consumer rights. Shri Imran Hussain asked the Secretary (Consumer Affairs) to create a suitable mechanism through which the number of cases filed by the citizens can be reduced. He also stressed the need to organise more Lok Adalats for the early disposal of pending cases.
Shri Imran Hussain further added that the Arvind Kejriwal-led government in Delhi has promised to strengthen the mechanisms that are formulated to benefit the general public in getting Delhi Government schemes hassle free. Protection of consumer rights and redressal of their grievances is the utmost priority of the Delhi Government’s Department of Consumer Affairs. Keeping in mind the protection of consumers rights, Delhi Government appointed members on 26 vacant posts out of a total 35 sanctioned posts in the State and District Commissions, in which three members were appointed in the state commission and 23 members were appointed in the District Commission.
Any consumer can complain under Consumer Protection Act, 2020. The jurisdiction of the Consumer Commission has been decided such that for cases with claims up to Rs 50 Lakh, the consumer can approach the District Commission. For claims between Rs 50 Lakh and 2 Crore, the consumer can approach the State Commission.
In the meeting, Shri Imran Hussain said, “Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has taken significant steps in the last seven years so that the disputes are resolved as soon as possible. Delhi is also among the first states to have launched the e-filing consumer complaints system. Ever since the launch of this initiative, the number of cases has reduced significantly. To fulfil this objective, I would like to request the Consumer Affairs Department, Government of Delhi to keep working on resolving the consumer complaints at the earliest. The Delhi Government will extend all possible help for strengthening the necessary infrastructural support for the achievement of this goal.”
