The Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) of Delhi has partnered with the EPIC Electronics Product Foundation to develop and implement a plan for Delhi’s ‘Electronic City’ initiative announced in Delhi Government’s Rozgar Budget 2022-23 with the aim to attract investment and jobs associated with the design, manufacturing, sale and after-sales services of electronic equipment.
Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Manish Sisodia had announced during his ‘Rozgar Budget’ presentation for 2022-23 that an ‘Electronic City’ will be set up at Baprola in Delhi to create 80,000 jobs in 5 years through electronics manufacturing. With an agenda for job creation and giving respite to people from the economic impact of the pandemic, the ‘Rozgar Budget’ (Employment Budget) of Delhi aims to generate 20 lakh new jobs in the next five years.
DDC Delhi, the premier policy thinktank of Delhi Government, has already begun work to enable an economic ecosystem conducive for the research, design, manufacturing, distribution and servicing of electronics in Delhi to drive increased state employment and maximise gross state value add.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC), Delhi and EPIC Electronics Product Foundation on Monday in the presence of DDC Delhi Vice Chairperson Shri Jasmine Shah and EPIC Chairman, Padma Bhushan Awardee Shri Ajai Chowdhry. The partnership aims to develop a healthy, competitive electronics design-manufacture-service market in Delhi and make Delhi the preferred destination for the same.
Shri Jasmine Shah, Vice-Chairperson, DDC Delhi, said, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Government is committed to following through with each of its announced Rozgar Budget initiatives. The Delhi Electronics City initiative will help boost design, manufacture, sales and service of electronics to feed domestic as well as global demand by partnering with the national and international expert industry organisations. Efforts undertaken towards skilling of the workforce in these areas will help improve employment outcomes for workers in Delhi, especially for women, and create service capability in every part of Delhi. This collaboration will go a long way in leading Delhi towards a future with green, clean and sustainable industries and achieving Kejriwal Government’s ambitious vision of a modern, equitable and sustainable Delhi@2047.”
Through provision of infrastructure and resources, including promotions and incentives wherever necessary, DDC Delhi shall endeavour to encourage foreign and domestic entities in the electronics industry to set up research, design, manufacturing and service centres in Delhi, thereby creating a positive impact on Delhi’s economy. EPIC shall assist DDC Delhi access educational, human and other relevant resources and help leverage related government schemes and programs to cultivate Delhi into an electronics design-sale-purchase hub.
As first steps, Delhi Government will invite anchor units to set up base at Delhi’s upcoming Electronics City in an 81-acre plug-and-play infrastructure centre. EPIC, under the guidance of DDC Delhi, will work closely with multiple partner channels like the domestic and international electronics champions, anchor units and other industry experts to realise the same. Moreover, the partnership will help skill the workforce required for the manufacture, repair and servicing of electronic products, with a special emphasis on training women and increasing their participation in Delhi’s workforce. The partnership will also work on creating a strong eco-system of knowledge-based hardware start-ups in Delhi.
EPIC Chairperson and HCL co-founder, Padma Bhushan Awardee Shri Ajai Chowdhry said, “We are excited to work with DDC Delhi and Delhi Skill Development organizations to help foster the design and manufacturing of electronics in Delhi and help skill people for the manufacturing, repair and servicing of the electronics developed under the umbrella, with a special emphasis on training women. This partnership is initiated by the EPIC Electronics Product Foundation as an effort to make Delhi an integral part of the Global Value Chain (GVC) by cultivating a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
