NEW DELHI:
A new court building with 44 court rooms was inaugurated in Delhi’s Karkardooma Court Complex today. The state-of-the-art building was developed by the Delhi Government as part of its commitment to enhance the judicial infrastructure of the state. On this occasion, Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal said, “Delhi Government is trying its best to strengthen Delhi’s Judiciary to a level that it stands as a Model System for the country. Delhi Government is committed towards the cause of empowering the judiciary and will not rest till the goal is accomplished. In just five years, the Delhi Government increased the budget allocation for the judiciary from Rs 660 crores to Rs 2,000 crores.” Further highlighting the success of the Lawyers’ Welfare Schemes run by the Delhi Government, CM Arvind Kejriwal stated, “Over 30,000 lawyers have registered for Delhi Government’s welfare schemes introduced in November 2019. During the pandemic 1,857 lawyers took benefit of the medical insurance while 157 availed the life insurance under the scheme. Till now, Rs 21 crore have been dispensed towards medical insurance claims and Rs 15.70 crores towards life insurance claims under the lawyer’s welfare scheme.”
A new court building developed by the Delhi Government was inaugurated today at the Karkardooma Court Complex by Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul in the august presence of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal and Union Minister of State for Law & Justice Prof. SP Singh Baghel.
Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Delhi Justice Vipin Sanghi, Justice Najmi Waziri, Chairperson, BMCC (Karkardooma Court Complex), Justice Talwant Singh, judges from the Delhi High Court and the Karkardooma Court, as well as other senior officers, including the Delhi Police Commissioner, were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the dignitaries, Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal said, “It is a matter of pride and happiness to see 44 courts be added at Karkardooma. The infrastructure here is so spectacular that even filmmakers would seek inspiration for their court set-designs from our new court complex. We are all aware of the fantastic judicial infrastructure present in Delhi. The present and previous governments have made spectacular contributions to raise the bar. I have expressed this on every platform possible that the most important element of the society is an empowered judicial system. If the judicial system is not strengthened and rigid then the society tends to fall apart. I reinforce the Delhi Government’s commitment towards strengthening the legal systems in whatever capacity possible. The greatest testament to our commitment to legal parity is the continuously increasing judicial budget allotted by our government. The budget allocation for the judiciary before we came to power was around Rs 660 crores. Last year we allocated Rs 2,000 crores for the judiciary. We increased the budget by over three times in the last 5 years.”
He added, “The gap however is so wide that there are a lot of important steps to be taken in that direction. In this context, I met with Justice Sanghi, where we discussed several proposals regarding the strengthening of the judiciary under our capacities. We are working actively on the same now. The Delhi Government is trying its best to develop Delhi’s judiciary as a Model for the world to follow just as it has done in education and healthcare.”
The Delhi CM further highlighted the welfare schemes being run by the Delhi Government for lawyers and said, “They say whatever God does is for the greater good. Lawyers of Delhi were distressed due to non-implementation of welfare schemes for them. They sought medical and life insurance for themselves and their families. After several rounds of discussions, in November 2019, we approved a scheme worth Rs. 50 crore to cover health and life insurance for lawyers. Over 30,000 lawyers have so far applied for the scheme. We passed this scheme in November 2019 and three months later the pandemic struck. During COVID, 1,867 took benefit of the medical insurance under the scheme. 400 claims are still pending and yet, Rs 21 crore has been dispensed to cover their healthcare treatments. 157 lawyers passed away during COVID and their families received Rs 15.7 crore as insurance under the scheme. We have received a lot of appreciation for this scheme from the lawyers and judiciary alike. We now strive to collaborate with all stakeholders of the judicial system of Delhi to develop the ‘Delhi Judiciary Model’ to help the society walk towards positive growth. I am confident that with the support of the people, we will achieve this feat too.”
