The Kejriwal Government is making preparations on a war footing to prevent waterlogging in Delhi during monsoon this year. In this regard, the Public Works Department (PWD) has identified various hotspots of waterlogging in the capital and has been working to prepare such infrastructure, which will prevent waterlogging in future. On Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Manish Sisodia held a review meeting with PWD officials to take stock of these preparations. He directed the concerned officials to ensure that all the preventive measures by PWD are in place before monsoon, to prevent any inconvenience to the public. Along with this, he also reviewed the progress of various ongoing projects.

From June 15, PWD will also set up a Central Control Room from where 10 critical waterlogging sites in Delhi will be monitored 24×7 through CCTV cameras. 2,064 km of drain comes under PWD, of which desilting work of 80% drains has been completed and by June 15 the remaining work will also be completed.

Kejriwal Government’s action plan to prevent serious waterlogging

Pul Prahladpur Underpass Several water logging incidents were reported from here over the years. This year to prevent any such situation, PWD is constructing an underground sump of 7.5 lakh litres capacity and a permanent pump house of 600 horsepower. The construction work of the underground sump and pump house will be completed by the end of May. Along with this, 7 temporary pumps will also be installed here, which will have a total capacity of 500 horsepower. 80% construction work of underground sump and pump house has been completed. Rest of the construction work will be completed by June 15. 7 CCTV cameras have also been installed here for monitoring, through which the situation will be monitored from the PWD’s control room 24*7.

Under Zakhira Flyover-
During monsoon, waste from temporary drains built by railways blocks the underpass. Due to this the water pumps get clogged and cause waterlogging in the area. PWD is installing screens to stop the waste of the railway line and this work will be completed by June 10. Also, the storm drain coming from Nehru Nagar/Anand Parvat will be rerouted. Here the pump capacity is being increased to 370 horsepower.

IP Estate Ring Road, Opposite WHO Building-
To eliminate the problem of water logging on Ring Road, 9 pumps will be installed here as well as PWD will construct 1.5 lakh litres sump and storm water drain from old IP power plant to Yamuna. This construction work will be completed before monsoon.

Jahangirpuri Metro Station Road-

Action plan of PWD to prevent water logging here includes construction of a drain along with service road, reconstruction of old stormwater drain between main road and Mukarba Chowk bound, along with main road towards Ramgarh and Mahendra Park etc, remodeling of stormwater drain and construction of permanent pump house is also included.

Minto-Bridge-
Till a year ago, even if there was less rain, the situation of water logging used to arise under the Minto-Bridge. To overcome this, many permanent steps were taken by the Kejriwal Government last year and despite the unexpected rains, people did not face water logging here. This year, the Delhi Government will set up an alternate drainage system and an automatic water pump to further improve its preparedness in this area. Adding further to its preparations this year, Delhi Government is setting up an Alternate Drainage System and Automatic Water Pump here and this work will be completed by June 12. Along with this, CCTV monitoring and water level alarm systems are also being installed by PWD here.

Loni Road Roundabout-

A new pipeline is being laid here and the existing electric pump capacity is being augmented.

Karala Kanjhawala Road-

Trolley mounted pumps are being installed by PWD at 3 spots here as well as Karala Kanjhawala Road is also being repaired, so that the situation of water logging does not arise during the monsoon.
