NEW DELHI

The Kejriwal Government is committed to fulfilling its schemes announced in the Rozgar Budget. The Rozgar Budget aims to create 20 lakh new job opportunities in the next five years in Delhi and various initiatives have been undertaken by the government to further this objective. Developing Gandhinagar as the “Grand Garment Hub” is one of the most ambitious projects, which is being developed in a phased manner. Deputy Chief Minister Shri Manish Sisodia held a review meeting on Friday to review the progress of the project.

The Deputy Chief Minister in the meeting said that Gandhinagar is globally renowned as the readymade garment market and gives a unique identity to Delhi. He said that the redevelopment of Gandhinagar project is one of the most ambitious projects for the Delhi Government, which will be a milestone in boosting the economy of Delhi and generating thousands of jobs. He further added that the redevelopment will not only give Gandhinagar a new identity, but will also increase business for merchants and provide a new shopping experience for the people.

Redevelopment of Gandhi Nagar would be done in 2 phases considering the ongoing economic activities in the area

Phase 1

In Phase 1 of the redevelopment of Gandhi Nagar the steps to address the immediate and urgent problems faced by local traders at the time include:

Arrangement of public facilities, drinking water and other facilities;
Installation of CCTV cameras and security monitoring system;
Redesign street light and street furniture; and
Installation of visual information system.

Phase 2

In the second phase of redevelopment, the Government will focus on urban redesigning and the architecture of the market. Simultaneously, national and international marketing of the area, digitization of area information, setting up of fire-fighting facilities and upgradation of existing facilities will be included.

It is noteworthy that Gandhinagar is the largest readymade garment market in Asia. Due to the high density of the area, basic facilities are now unable to meet the growing requirements. This has started affecting the businesses as well. Hence, the aim of the Delhi Government is to redesign the area, making the best use of space, creating world-class infrastructure which will attract customers and in turn increase businesses. It will also be ensured that during the redevelopment activity, the business of traders is not adversely impacted.
