Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair in Anthropology celebrated the 66thMahaparinirvanDiwas on December 06, 2021, as part of major celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. This was done in association with the original spirit of the clarion call“Baba Saheb Amar Rahe” invoked by the Government of India.This Mahotsav is dedicated to the people of India such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar who have not only been instrumental in bringing India thus far in its evolutionary journey but also hold within them the power and potential to enable Prime Minister Modi’s vision of activating India 2.0, fuelled by the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Delivering the inaugural remarks, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair Professor Dr. Subrata Sankar Bagchi, spoke about the pivotal role played by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the traditional reformer and the true conscience keeper of India.Honourable Registrar of University of Calcutta Professor Debasis Das gave a brief speech on Ambedkar and Buddhism after the initial speech of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair Professor. Floral tributes were paid to the image of Dr. Ambedkar by the Registrar of University of Calcutta Professor Debasis Das, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Professor Asis Kumar Chattopadhyay, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair Professor Dr. Subrata Sankar Bagchi, other teachers, students of the University of Calcutta and the three distinguished speakers present in the event.

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair in Anthropology, University of Calcutta also part took in an online held by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation at Dr. Ambedkar International Center, New Delhi campus on this occasion.This was followed by Dhamma Puja by Buddhist monks along with a seminar on Ambedkar and Buddhism.  The event was well attended physically and virtually by people from different walks of life across West Bengal. All the norms of physical distancing and COVID-19 SOPs were followed during the entirety of the aforesaid program.
