NEW DELHI:
Exposing BJP’s brazen lack of management and governance in the MCD, Environment Committee Chairperson & MLA Ms Atishi informed how the party is creating hurdles in Delhi Vidhan Sabha Environment Committee’s proceedings on the Ghazipur Landfill fires. Ms Atishi stated, “BJP ruled MCD is refusing to submit garbage management details to Delhi Vidhan Sabha’s Environment Committee to prevent its scams from being exposed. BJP leaders are squandering crores in the name of Ghazipur Landfill & East MCD’s garbage disposal. East MCD’s failure in presenting documents about Ghazipur landfill proves its incompetence and the hints towards fllagrant corruption in the system. BJP knows if it presents these documents its corruption will come out in the open and make them realise how it has left people to die. The Environment Committee has sent another notice to East MCD asking for details of all recycling plants, compost plants, and trommel machines within a week.”
MLA Ms Atishi said, “The BJP has been in power in the MCD for the past 15 years. In this decade and a half of sheer misgovernance and corruption, the BJP-led MCD has gifted the three gigantic landfills to the people of Delhi. The first site that catches the eye of someone entering Delhi are these landfills. The Ghazipur landfill in East Delhi has now reached the height same as Qutub Minar – 140 lac tonnes of waste is found at this site, and the East MCD has no solution to this enormous amount of waste posing a hazard to the people and the environment in the Ghazipur area. There are repeated instances of fire at this landfill site in summers; in the past 3 weeks, the place has caught fire twice already, engulfing the surrounding area in a looming cloud of smoke. Due to this, the Environment Committee of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha summoned East MCD officers to inquire about their solutions to tackle such instances of fire in future, and of eventual disposal of the landfill. We asked them about their plan for management of waste in the Ghazipur landfill, its proper treatment, and the prevention of addition of more garbage to the site. However, when these officers showed up in the Committee hearing, it became crystal clear that they have absolutely no idea of how to ensure a complete disposal of this landfill. They themselves admitted to the fact that the East MCD does not have any time bound action plan in place or a blueprint of navigating the disposal process, and nor do they have the funds to implement any disposal plans.”
She continued, “This poses a question of where the funds that were allocated for the treatment and disposal of these landfills went and the public reserves a right to demand an answer from the BJP-ruled East MCD. The BJP must respond by explaining where the money, which the East MCD obtained from the Kejriwal Government and through their various revenue sources of parking, property tax, and advertisements, was squandered. The East MCD must take accountability of the corruption it has committed which has diverted the funds from their single most important responsibility of waste and sanitation management in Delhi. The Environment Committee suspected the occurrence of a major scam, due to which the East MCD is saying that it does not have any solution for the disposal of the Ghazipur landfill. So we demanded that the East MCD officials present all related documents – tenders, all contracts with the various companies, details of recycling plants, compost plants, trommel machines & their cost – and to produce these, the East MCD asked the Environment Committee for a week. However, despite one week having passed, the East Municipal Corporation of Delhi has not produced a single document in front of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha.”
Ms Atishi concluded, “The East MCD’s failure to even present the documents concerning the waste management in Ghazipur landfill proves its incompetence and the hints towards fllagrant corruption in the system. The East MCD has caused a major scam in the name of disposing of the Ghazipur landfill, waste management, and setting up recycling plants and bio-decomposers. And in order to hide this scam, they are refusing to share their documents with the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Environment Committee. The BJP-led East MCD is well aware that if they present the real documents in front of the Committee, their 15-year long corruption will come to light. Their misgovernance and incompetence will be exposed, and it will be clear as day how much of the Delhi public’s money it has squandered, and how it has left the people of Delhi to die of the hazardous fumes and other chemicals resulting from these landfills. Today, a notice from the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Environment Committee has been sent to the East MCD. This notice directs East MCD to produce all the required documents regarding the Ghazipur landfill in front of the Committee at the earliest, otherwise strict action will be demanded against the officials of the East MCD.”
