Taking the next step towards implementation of the Kejriwal Government’s Rozgar Budget, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Manish Sisodia, who holds the finance portfolio, met with the members of 40 market associations of the national capital on Thursday. The meeting was called to take the suggestions of the businessmen for the redevelopment of iconic markets of the city and on the framework of Delhi Shopping Festival. Members of market associations from all across the city participated in the meeting. While interacting with the members of city market associations, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “Redevelopment of the city’s historic and iconic markets and Delhi Shopping festival will increase the sources of income and will develop the image of Delhi as an international shopping hub. Along with this it will add to the job opportunities in the city. But before designing the framework for both these schemes of the Delhi Government, it is important for us to know from people who are working on the ground and know these markets better than us.”

He added that Delhi’s markets have been the one stop destination for shoppers since ages, but over the years they have become congested and inaccessible for many. Delhi Government aims to redesign, decongest and redevelop these markets in order to increase their business opportunities. Soon after this meeting a form will be made live on Delhi Government website to know about the issues of the markets and collect suggestions from the businessmen of the city.

During the meeting Deputy Chief Minister sought suggestions from the market associations on how market associations can assist the government in redevelopment of iconic markets, what issues do they foresee in the redevelopment effort, what could be the right time to organize Delhi Shopping festival etc. Members of market associations from all across the city shared their views on the same with exuberance.

Tarun Gupta, a member of the Market Association from Dariba Kalan said, “We have seen many governments and had the view that governments only talk to businessmen about taxes, but for the first time I have seen a government which is talking about increasing the business opportunities. Hope this redevelopment initiative brings change in our iconic markets.”

Atul Bhargava, President, Connaught Place Market Association said, “We welcome the move of the government to organize a shopping festival to boost the market sales. The success of the event depends on the involvement of local markets, and meetings of this nature are highly appreciated.”

Adding on, Sanjay Bhargav, President Chandni Chowk Market Traders Association applauded the Delhi Government’s effort for welfare of Delhi’s markets and traders. He further added that Chandni Chowk’s redevelopment has been monumental for the market’s growth and the government will have support of all the members of the association in the redevelopment projects too.

Chamber of Trade and Industry Chairman Brijesh Goyal said, “Delhi’s businessmen are excited about the Rozgar budget. Their enthusiasm can be assessed from the fact that about 100 senior members from 40 big market associations of Delhi participated in the meeting today. “

It is to be noted that after this meeting, Delhi Government will release a suggestion form on its website to reachout all the businessmen in the city on April 22 to take their suggestions on making Delhi’s iconic markets world-class. Businessmen willing to support the Delhi Government in designing the strategy for this initiative can participate by providing details of the issues in markets and suggestions through this form.
