NEW DELHI:
A high-level joint meeting chaired by Environment Minister Shri Gopal Rai was held at the Delhi Secretariat today with experts from the DPCC, MCD, IIT Delhi, Department of Environment, TERI, CSE, IGL, GAIL, and other concerned departments. At this meeting, there was a lot of discussion and brainstorming about tackling the increasing frequency of fires in landfills.
Divulging more details on the same, Environment Minister Shri Gopal Rai said, “In this meeting experts like Bhupinder Singh and Shiv Prasad of ICAR-IARI, Professor Manoj Dutta from IIT Delhi, Atin Biswas and Dr. Richa Singh from CSE, Narendra Pandey, Gaurav Sharma and Sushant Chaudhary from IGL, Sunil Pandey from TERI, Ashu Singhal and Sanjeev Kumar from GAIL were present. The gas sucking system built at Mumbai’s dumping site was chosen after consultation with experts from all concerned departments. In addition, the teams from the DPCC and MCD have been given orders to travel to Mumbai to check on the working model of the gas sucking system. DPCC and MCD teams have also been given orders to conduct constant inspections in order to avoid the outbreak of fires in landfill sites.”
Orders given to adopt gas sucking system installed in dumping sites of Mumbai
Expressing his concerns over increasing fire incidents in landfill sites, the Environment Minister said, “The Kejriwal Government has given orders to MCD and DPCC to adopt the gas sucking system installed at Mumbai’s dumping site to provide a permanent solution to the problem of fire incidents in landfill sites. The biggest cause of fire in landfill sites is the continuous release of methane gas, which not only promotes fire incidents but is also harmful to the atmosphere. With the installation of this Gas sucking system, emission of methane gas from the waste can be regulated to an extent. Taking these factors into consideration, orders have also been issued by the ministry to send combined teams of DPCC and MCD to Mumbai to get information about the working model of the gas sucking system.”
He further added, “During the meeting’s discussion with the experts many other suggestions were also discussed. Ideas such as installing gas wells, covering waste with soil by roughly 10 cm, and sorting waste into six categories were considered in order to prevent fire incidents by taking action on them at the earliest.”
500 teams of 10 departments deployed under anti open burning campaign
Environment Minister Shri Gopal Rai also threw light on the Anti Open Burning campaign and said, “Under this campaign, 500 teams of 10 departments have been deployed all over Delhi. They are conducting round the clock inspections and taking appropriate action related to case wise instances of open burning.”
Orders given to teams of DPCC and MCD for continuous inspection of landfill site
Shri Gopal Rai concluded, “MCD and DPCC teams have also been given orders to keep a vigilant eye on any fires that break out at landfills. These teams will not only monitor landfill sites on a regular basis, but will also seek to avoid future fires. The Delhi government is working hard to ensure that the city is not just pollution-free but also clean.”
