New Delhi:

Health Minister Shri Satyendar Jain attended the ‘Samvedna 2022’ program organised by Dr. BR Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital and Cancer Foundation at Delhi’s Ph.D. house, as chief guest. During the event, The Health Minister discussed issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer at the right time. He also talked at length about the Delhi Government’s role in providing effective and affordable treatment of cancer to the people of Delhi. Health Minister Shri Satyendar Jain said, “There is no doubt that cancer has been recognized as one of the most dreadful diseases by researchers and medical experts worldwide. Majority of those who are affected by the disease end up losing their lives due to untimely or improper treatment. This disease doesn’t hold age as a bar and affects people from all age groups ranging from children to senior citizens. The treatment of the disease is indeed difficult but not impossible. To make our nation cancer-free, our primary focus should be on accelerating public awareness programs aimed at eradicating myths related to the disease”

The Health Minister said that one thing that has been well established about cancer is the seriousness of the people towards the disease. India is nowhere behind developed countries in the treatment of cancer, but when people have money, they keep looking for better options. For patients who get the right treatment, their chances of recovery are the same as in developed countries. The Delhi government is working continuously to reduce the ignorance and apathy among the people about cancer and make them aware and educated and dispel the myths related to this disease. He appreciated Dr. BR Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital and said that it has a team of skilled and experienced doctors along with state-of-the-art facilities for the treatment of cancer. There are facilities for various types of testing and diagnosis as well in the hospital and the availability of quality cancer treatment at very affordable rates in the hospital is an example for other medical centres in the country.

Shri Satyendar Jain said that screening and regular checkups are imperative in the fight against cancer. The people of the country can ward off and win the battle against the disease by adopting a healthier lifestyle. About two-thirds of cancer cases worldwide are related to lifestyle. This means that cancer can be prevented. It is necessary to spread awareness about tobacco and alcohol so that people understand that these things can cause cancer in the tissues. Spreading awareness and educating the masses about cancer can also help in the early detection of symptoms of cancer. At the same time, obesity is also a big risk factor for cancer. Cancer patient care can never be done properly in an isolated hospital environment. Established and specialized hospitals for cancer can provide necessary medical and initial psychological support to the victim. In today’s day and age it is imperative that along with our external appearance, we also take care of what goes inside our bodies and take care of our internal health. It is important to adopt a better lifestyle especially when it comes to our dietary choices. The purer we are from the inside, the better our thoughts will be. The consumption of five types of fruits and five types of vegetables is extremely important to prevent cancer.

Shri Satyendar Jain said that the main objective of the Delhi government is to further improve the health services in the capital so that people can get quality treatment free of cost or at least at an affordable price. At present, medical colleges are playing a crucial role in the treatment of cancer victims, in this context, the Delhi government is continuously working towards the construction of medical colleges to meet the shortage of specialists and to ensure proper availability of medicines to those affected. While on one hand, the government has taken the initiative to open a medical college in Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Hospital, it is also working expeditiously in ensuring necessary medicines and counselling services for cancer patients. All required efforts are being made to provide cheap and accessible treatment of cancer to the people of Delhi.

Shri Ajay Narayan, Secretary-General, Rotary Foundation presented a report on the activities of the Cancer Foundation in the program. Apart from this, cancer survivors Smt Rekha Gulabani and Smt Smita Singh shared their experiences of battling one of the most dreadful diseases in the world. They said that in order to fight cancer, it is necessary for any person to be mentally strong and have their family members support them through the recovery process.

Dr. Neerja Bhatla, Professor and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at AIIMS, discussed the role of Rotary in cervical cancer and its prevention. She said that Rotary Cancer Hospital is a specialised center for cancer treatment in AIIMS New Delhi. She said that the hospital is one of the few centers in the country to have established a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bone Marrow Transplant program.
