NEW DELHI

The Kejriwal government’s pioneering initiative of free online yoga classes under “Dilli Ki Yogshala” is assisting COVID patients in boosting their immunity while bound at home. It not only boosts immunity, but it also helps people de-stress. Patients are quickly recovering from COVID infection. Efforts have been made to alleviate patients’ loneliness and to support their mental health through online yoga classes. Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal had officially announced this program on January 11, 2022.

What is Kejriwal Government’s “online yoga class” for COVID patients in home isolation?

The Delhi government is offering free online yoga classes to COVID patients who are being treated at home in order to boost their immunity. Professionally trained yoga teachers provide free online yoga classes on a regular basis. The Health Department of the Government of Delhi sends a link to those who are corona positive under this initiative. Affected patients can register for online yoga classes by clicking on this link. COVID patients can select a time slot for 8 one-hour classes from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., as needed.

Hundreds of instructors ready to provide online yoga classes to 40,000 people

The government has ensured that only 15 patients will be assigned to a yoga instructor in order for the patients to receive better care and for the instructor to give each patient individual attention. Currently, the Delhi government employs hundreds of professionally trained Yoga instructors to teach yoga to 40,000 people. In addition, new trainers are being trained. So far, over 3,000 people have enrolled in and are benefiting from this scheme.

Dr. Munesh Kasana from East of Kailash said, “I am a doctor who has been practising yoga for a long time. When I found out I had COVID earlier this month, I enrolled in online yoga classes offered by the Delhi government. The government-appointed yoga instructor here taught me the yoga asanas in a very simple and easy way, through which our immunity can be boosted. Because this variant of COVID affects the lungs, we were taught special asanas and pranayama related to the lungs in yoga classes to ensure that the oxygen level did not drop. I am impressed with Delhi Government’s initiative, and am also promoting among my family members.”

Another beneficiary Surendra Malik said, “During these unprecedented times, the Delhi Government’s online yoga class is a very good initiative. The best part about this initiative is that we can participate in it while still in home isolation. Not only has this increased my immunity, but it has also allowed me to recover from COVID faster. I believe that the state government is making an investment to improve human resources and keep citizens healthy that will pay off in the future.”

Radhe Shyam, a Dental Assistant from Mundka said, “I was infected with COVID in 2020 as well, and I used to get bored during my home isolation, but not this time. After joining an online yoga programme started by the Delhi government, I never felt bored or lonely during my entire isolation period. Not only was our immunity system boosted through yoga, but the trainers also looked after our mental health and continued to support us. The trainers are excellent, and they solicit patient feedback on a regular basis. I really appreciate this initiative of the Delhi government.”

At the same time Sanjay Aggarwal said, “During my isolation, I had the opportunity to participate in free online yoga classes provided by the Delhi government. I’ve been doing yoga for a long time, but this is where I learned about the COVID-specific yoga asanas. This initiative is extremely beneficial to the people and has helped to alleviate stress. Our yoga instructor also personally assists everyone.”

Amresh Jha, a Yoga Instructor under the scheme said, “Yoga and Pranayama are the most effective methods for maintaining physical and mental health during COVID. During the third wave, it must be observed that most cases of infection have mild symptoms that can be treated in home-isolation. The Delhi government has initiated providing free yoga classes in order to help people recover quickly and avoid mental stress. This is the first time a state government has taken such a step. I am thrilled to be a part of this initiative and to be able to assist those who have been infected. Hundreds of yoga instructors, including myself, are taking part in this initiative. We are not only teaching yoga to the patients, but we are also assisting them in reducing stress and loneliness.”
