NEW DELHI/PUNJAB:

The Aam Aadmi Party is upholding the legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, in not just Delhi, but Punjab as well. Keeping this in mind, AAP National Convenor and Delhi CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal announced that once AAP comes to power, offices of the Punjab Government will only have portraits of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh on display. Shri Kejriwal said — No images of political leaders or even the CM will be spotted in government offices in Punjab. Future generations will be able to draw inspiration when they look at images of Babasaheb and Bhagat Singh. Everytime we look at their image, we will be reminded of their struggles, of their sacrifice, and especially their ideas and teachings. I have also announced that we will put photographs of Babasaheb and Bhagat Singh in every government office in Delhi. Like the Delhi Government, the Punjab Government will also run on the ideas laid by these two eminent leaders of the freedom struggle. The paths that Babasaheb and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh took were different, but their destination was the same: both dreamt of a flourishing India, with great education and health care, and equal rights for all. A person’s success in life should not be dependent on the caste they were born in. Babasaheb earned not one, but two PhDs at a time when no one knew of universities abroad. Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh laid his life down for the country at a young age of 23. At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party CM Candidate and MP Sardar Bhagwant Mann stated – We will put up photos of those who liberated the country in all our government buildings.

The martyrdom of all our freedom fighters are invaluable to us; we will never forget them: Arvind Kejriwal

Shri Arvind Kejriwal said, “It has been 75 years since our country earned its independence after deep turmoil. Many people laid their lives down; many struggled for years in order for India to gain freedom. However, we are gradually forgetting our roots; we are consigning their ideals to oblivion, weighing petty politics down on our democratic system. We cannot treat any of the freedom fighters and martyrs as less valuable than another. But if we look at the noted leaders from the days of India’s fight for independence, two extremely eminent names stand out, who represent the entire freedom struggle as a whole. These prominent leaders were Babasaheb Ambedkar and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. These two were such ardent freedom devotees that they together represent the emotions and ideals of all our freedom fighters. We are not just fans of Babasaheb Ambedkar, but his devotees. We worship him. We really look up to him. Einstein had said that the coming generations will not be able to believe the kind of thick-skinned person Mahatma Gandhi was – that such a personality even graced our planet. Today, I repeat the same comparison for Babasaheb Ambedkar. Reading and learning about his ideas, the struggles that he endured, and all that he achieved despite the adverse circumstances, leaves me in awe that such a person has walked on planet Earth.”

Babasaheb made sure education was his priority, and gave it utmost importance throughout his life: Arvind Kejriwal

He continued, “It is in fact tough to believe that someone who was born in such a poor household, coming from the Mahar caste – which at the time was considered untouchable; who would not be allowed to sit in class, so he would sit outside; whose family did not have enough food in their household to feed his siblings – the same man made it out of his unfortunate background, achieved for himself a quality education and went to the United States and the United Kingdom and earned not one, but two PhDs. I wonder, back in 1914-15, there was no internet, or a lot of information about education to know of colleges in America like University of California or London School of Economics, or how to apply to these places. It is a wonder how he made it through the process, received scholarship and completed his education. He was an exception. In today’s day and age, it is a great headache to even garner one PhD from a university abroad, imagine earning two such doctorates more than a century ago. He earned his Masters degree in several subjects as well. And then he penned down the historic constitution of our country. Throughout his life, he made sure education was his priority, and gave it utmost importance.”

Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh laid his life down for the country at the young age of 23 when most are planning their future: Arvind Kejriwal

He added, “The paths that Babasaheb and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh took were different, but their goal was one. Both wanted for an independent India to be an educated one. They believed that all Indians should receive proper health care, and overall that the country should flourish; that there should be no discrimination based on caste or religion, and everyone should share equal rights. A person’s success in life should not be dependent on the caste they were born in. At the age of 23, when a man normally plans for his future, a job, marriage, kids, and so on, Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh laid his life down for our nation.”

CM Shri Arvind Kejriwal concluded, “In Delhi, I made an announcement on 26th January that all offices of the Delhi Government will only have displays of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. Today, we declare that once our government is formed in Punjab, no office of the Punjab Government will have displays of the CM or any other political leader. Only Babasaheb Ambedkar and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh’s pictures and displays will be put up across each and every office, so that both our generation and the future ones can draw some inspiration from their lives every time we look at their faces. It will remind us of their struggles, of their martyrdom, and especially their ideas and teachings. I had declared that the Delhi Government will run on the ideas laid by these two eminent leaders of the freedom struggle, and so will the Punjab Government once the Aam Aadmi Party comes to power.”

Will put up photos of those who liberated the country in government building: Bhagwant Mann

Aam Aadmi Party CM Candidate and MP Sardar Bhagwant Mann said, “The decision made by the Aam Aadmi Party is historic. Typically, we see the Prime Minister’s or Chief Minister’s photos displayed at government offices. We want to hang pictures of those who liberated the country in government buildings. Given how much the country has been looted in the last 70 years post independence, the British might be ashamed of not doing enough in their 200 year rule . Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh gave the country freedom, and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar described that freedom by writing a constitution in which everyone has equal rights, leaving no place for the caste system to persist; where everyone is treated equally. I am delighted with the announcement that, following the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party government, photographs of Babasaheb and Bhagat Singh will be displayed in Punjab’s government offices. I’m a huge follower of both, and so are millions of people.”
